Dark to Bright Patterns

Identify dark patterns that harm user agency and opt for bright patterns that help user clarity and informed decisions instead.

Use Bright instead of Dark Patterns

Identify dark patterns that harm user agency and opt for bright patterns that help user clarity and informed decisions instead.

  • What are Dark Patterns?

Dark Patterns are manipulative design strategies that trick users into doing things they might not do otherwise. They are also called deceptive patterns.

  • What are Bright Patterns?

Bright Patterns are ethical design patterns that make choices clear and respect people’s autonomy and privacy. They are also called fair patterns.

  • How are the Patterns structured?

Patterns are grouped into high, meso, and low levels to describe how broadly they are defined overall strategies to detailed interface choices.

  • What is the Symbiosis Page?

The Symbiosis page pairs dark high- and meso-level patterns with bright patterns. It gives advices on how to replace manipulative strategies with ethical alternatives.

  • Where are the Patterns from?

Every detailpage for each pattern includes its sources. The complete list of all sources can be found in the footer on all pages.

  • What is this Project about?

This project is part of my Bachelor's thesis in User Experience Design at the Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt. It aims to raise awareness about dark patterns and promote ethical design practices.
